In
Escazú, Urban Chic meets Country
Charm, which is one of the reasons
it is so beautiful, and is such
a select place to live. In this
suburban town campesinos in
rural houses are residing comfortably
next to large homes of diplomats
and international jetsetters.
Cool winds blow down from the
mountains creating "post-card
picture" days, while exotic
birds sing the magic that is
Escazú, Costa Rica.
Escazú was originally a crossroads
on trails between Indian villages
and the Indians found it a good
place to spend the night on
their journeys and gave it it's
name, "Izt-kat-zu", which means
"resting stone" Spanish settlers
were also attracted to Escazú
where they settled in the hills
and began farming. It was during
these early days that Escazú
became known as the City of
the "Good Witches", and many
say there are witches living
still.... who will, for a fee,
tell one's fortune or concoct
a love potion. Today Escazú
is an interesting and unique
blend of old Costa Rica and
a modern, international community.
The town center has adobe buildings,
a nice church and a soccer field.
It has the feeling of a sleepy,
campesino town where neighbors
have known each other for generations.
Just
outside of town, however, are
enclaves of luxury homes owned
by North Americans and Europeans...
drawn to the beauty of Escazú.
Above the town of Escazú is
a smaller village, "San Antonio
de Escazú". Every March it holds
an Oxcart Festival called "Dia
de los Boyeros" with almost
100 painted carts, some nearly
a century old, with huge oxen
that haul them. Hundreds of
campesinos and thousands of
visitors gather for this annual
festival.
Escazú
has become home to Artists and
traditional craftsmen. Many
cultural happenings and festivals
are organized throughout the
year. It has excellent gourmet
restaurants as well as traditional
ones. The new village and the
older village invite for shopping
sprees and excursions.
